ALOE VERA

Often extolled for its soothing qualities, Aloe Vera is most commonly used as a topical ointment for burns, sun damage, and skin abrasions. Aloe has won over many home gardeners for its hardiness and tolerance of forgetful waterers.

︎Low-Moderate maintenance, requires patience. Place in bright, indirect sunlight or artificial light.

︎Water the plant generously about once every two to three weeks, waiting until the soil dries out fully. Since this is a desert species, keeping the dirt moist will cause the roots to rot. Limp or brown leaves also signal you've overwatered.

︎ If you own pets it is recommended to keep this plant out of reach. It is mildly toxic to pets if ingested.

︎Stemless or very short-stemmed with thick, greenish, fleshy leaves that fan out from the plant’s central stem. The margin of the leaf is serrated with small teeth. Perfect in the kitchen or a location without sustained bright light.

︎ Water issues are the number one cause of problems with aloe vera. A wilting, brown aloe that has soft spots in the leaves is likely over watered. A plant with puckered leaves that are discoloring may be too dry. The leaves are a great indicator of the moisture needs of this plant. They should be plump and glossy green. To correct any water issues, repot the plant in a well-draining soil that is at least half gritty material such as sand or pumice. Once the plant is out of soil, check the roots for any rot and remove. Water only when the soil is dry to the touch when you insert a finger to the second knuckle. In winter, reduce water by half.

︎ Has tremendous healing properties. The gel inside its leaves is full of vitamins (digestible in liquids or foods) and naturally anti-bacterial making it ideal for treating minor cuts and burns including sunburn. The aloe vera gel can help improve dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. To harness the healing powers of this plant simply snap off a leaf, open it up and rub the inside of the leaves over the affected area for instant relief or scrape into your smoothies.
